Melanistic Tigers of Simlipal

Simlipal Tiger Reserve is known for being the best home to tigers and leopards. With the presence of 34 Royal Bengal Tigers and 61 Leopards, the Simlipal Tiger Reserve has been among the best tiger safaris in India. However, what sets Simlipal apart is the presence of Melanistic-tigers found nowhere else in the world. Without any doubt, this makes Simlipal not just unique but also a place where nature is at its best exhibiting some unusual phenomenon, where normal tigers are giving birth to black or melanistic tigers and even normal cubs are being delivered by the black or melanistic tigresses.

History

Since the 1970s, there have been sporadic sightings of black tigers in Simlipal Tiger Reserve. According to few records two adult melanistic tigers were spotted by Bitanath Nayak, then assistant field director, STR, on a road near Matughar in south Similipal. Laterin 1991, Niranjan Mohanta, a forest guard in the upper Barakhamba Range of the reserve claimed to have sighted a family of black tigers. However, many times these accounts are not considered to be true due to the lack of verification of these sightings.

However, it was in2007, when researchers from the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, the camera traps captured pictures of three melanistic tigers.

Since then, there have been extensive researches on this curious genetic phenomenon that make one of the best features at Simlipal National Park.
